I WAS AN ATHEIST UNTIL I READ LORD OF THE RINGS - FREDRIC HEIDEMANN

I was an atheist until I read LORD OF THE RINGS

Fredric lives with his wife and their daughter in the Lansing, Michigan area, where he also works as an attorney. Born and raised in an atheist family, Fredric dismissed religion until his late teenage years when he abandoned atheism. He entered the Catholic Church in 2006 during his freshman year of college and loves sharing his story.

Fredric writes: "I grew up in a loving, comfortable atheist household of professional scientists. My dad was a lapsed Catholic, and my mom was a lapsed Lutheran. From the time that I could think rationally on the subject, I did not believe in God. God was an imaginary being for which there was no proof. At best, God was a fantasy for half-witted people to compensate their ignorance and make themselves feel better about their own mortality. At worst, God was a perverse delusion responsible for most of the atrocities committed by the human race.

What broke the ice? What made me consider God’s existence a real possibility?" Please read the rest of his story by clicking on the link above.

Thank you Otto Diedericks for this story. I do appreciate it.

QUEEN ELIZABETH CONFESSES HER FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST

Queen Elizabeth confesses her faith in Jesus Christ

The Queen confesses her faith in Jesus Christ during her 2016 Christmas message. It is such a wonderful experience to listen to her confessing - unflinchingly, while she looks the world into the eye. Tannie, that is too wonderful for words.

I remind you that even our own Chief Justice, Mogoeng Mogoeng confesses his faith in Christ. On 21 November 2016 I posted a blog-post when I wrote: "It is very refreshing to follow our Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng's speeches and to see how consistently he refers to his faith in Christ Jesus. He longs for a more moral society and with leaders with integrity. I personally don't know any other Chief Justice of South Africa who were so openly in his testimony about a living faith in Christ." I encourage you to read that blog-post of mine.

And now the Queen of England. Thank you Madam.

I confess with Saint Peter that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God and my Saviour: "Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”. I pray that you too will confess that. You can read Peter's confession here and search for Peter's confession.

DR DAVID GOODALL - 102 YEAR OLD - RE-INSTATED AT THE UNIVERSITY

DR DAVID GOODALL - HE IS RE-INSTATED AT THE UNIVERSITY

Do you remember my post on 21 August 2016 about David Goodall that was forced by the Edith Cowan University Perth Australia to retire? David's children were worried that this drastic step could kill their father! He was so happy to go four day per week to the University and to meet people.

Well, I have very good news for you!! The University re-instated him for the next three years. What does David have to say about this lot? I prefer to be on campus because there are other people around and people who potentially are friends.

There are potential friends that would surrond him! At 102 years he still needs new friends in his life! And he needs to do the work that he loves! It is truly remarkable - here is a video clip of David in his new office at the Unversity!

WILLIAM KAMKWAMBA THE 14-YEAR-OLD BOY WHO BUILT A WINDMILL

William Kamkwamba's windmill - a crazy idea that generates electricity!

When you look around you, you will notice [If you really want to notice] a lot a most remarkable things happening all of the time. People are truly amazing. People are reaching out to others. People are striving to make this world a better place to live in.

Such a person is William Kamkwamba who is a school dropout and was starving together with his people in Malawi during a drought. But he was a person who said: “We skip the problem by creating our own solutions.” And he did exactly that by visiting his local library and started reading about energy and the power of windmills.

"We skip the problem by creating our own solutions" William Kamkwamba

The local community inclusive of his mother, thought he went mad when he started building his own windmill. His wild claims that his contraption will generate electricity then underscores what the common wisdom is all about: “William, you are crazy!

He continued with his ideas and he visited the local scrapyard and got parts for his crazy idea. He then built it. And it generated electricity enough to power four light bulbs in his home. Then there was enough electricity to charge the villagers cell phones.

Looking at his windmill, it is crude, and for all intents and purposes a crazy idea – yes the locals were spot on with their critique about this 14-year-old boy. But he and the wind knew better. His windmill works! And it generates power.

He now wants to build a stronger one to use for irrigation.

He is community minded.

He is driven by a passion not to sit and to look at things and complain!

No – he gets up and he does something about it.

He executes his ideas!

William is a Christian young man.

I am reminded about another man who was ridiculed about his crazy ideas until it started raining. Do you remember Noah? Do you remember how he was ridiculed while building his ark? That saved him and his family while others perished.

There was yet another Man who was ridiculed whilst He was perishing. Jesus Christ was ridiculed while He was hanging on the Cross for you and for me. You can read about Noah here [Genesis Chapter 6] and about Christ by clicking here [Matthew 27]. While you are searching for these chapters, please continue to read the entire sections and meditate about the contents.

May God bless you!

THE WOODEN SHAVING MUG AND CHEAP RAZORS

My cheap razor, shaving cream and trusted dented shaving brush

Every morning I take my shaving brush and a fingertip of shaving cream from my 180g plastic bowl. Then I use the cheapest razors on the market to have the cleanest shave in the world.

When I started shaving many, many years ago I used a Shick injector razor. I used it up to 2000 when I went down to Durban, South Africa to attend to a savage murder matter.
Unpacking my bags in the hotel room I realised I left my trusted Shick at home.

The hotel reception directed me to a very dingy dirty little shop just around the corner of this prestigious hotel. It was too creepy for words and I was on the lookout for crawly creatures lurking in the dark spaces ready to invade my personal space.

I bought the cheapest packet of 5 razors for about R5.00 per packet at that time [15 years ago]. It was cheap enough and had to last for exactly one shave. Financially it was worth the experiment of 1 razor for the price of R1.00. I thought I could manage that one!

Well it didn’t only last for one shave. It lasted me three months per razor. I then had 15 months of shaving pleasure for the grand sum of R5.00. Now I am a devotee of the cheapest, sharpest, best razors on the market.

When I started writing I actually wanted to tell you another related story; a story of a 20cm [8 inches] wooden shaving mug but I got side tracked and ended up with the story about a cheap and trusted razor. Let’s get to the real story written by Alan Patricof [80 odd years at the time of writing].

Alan Patricof's No 89 Floris 8-inch wooden shaving bowl

He got this No 89 Floris 8-inch wooden shaving bowl 30 years ago – that meant Alan was in his 50’s. And he uses it daily and lately it reminds him of his mortality; he is of the view that it might survive him. You can read his story and the poem by Rabbi Irwin Kula by clicking on this link:

You see, my story about my cheap, trusted and surgically sharp razors are not too farfetched or out of the way? I had a very clean shave this morning using the same stuff I had been using now for many years although not as long as Alan. I am going in for 16 – 17 years with the cheapy!

However, my story does not stop here. I want to tell you also about my brush I am using. You can see that it is somewhat used as it should be after more than 30 years of faithful duty. I had to glue it together again just about four days ago with Prattley’s putty. Maybe it will outlast me – who knows? I have no intention of getting rid of this brush – it knows my hands and the contours of my aging face. It knows its place on the window sill to dry out for the next morning’s shave. And it knows that if it gets knocked over I will come to its rescue and get it going; it knows it is not Humpty Dumpty who was wrecked beyond repair.

Tell me your story. Send me an e-letter to my e-address: neelscoertse@wirelessza.co.za

THE SUPER RICH GETS ROBBED ONLY IN SOUTH AFRICA? NO!!!

Bentley 2016

Do you think that crime is located only in South Africa? Oh no! Even in Paris, France people get robbed in their motorcars. Super rich people get waylaid on their way from a Paris France, airport to their hotel and they got robbed - click here to read that story. If you travel to Paris, France, here is a travel tip only if you are really uber-rich:  Think about keeping your valuables at home.

That is how this article in the influential Washington Post started! Two sisters from Qatar were teargassed in a Bentley and robbed of $5million.

Well, Kim Kardashian got robbed in her hotel room in Paris, France while she was attending the fashion week just the other day. You can read all about it in the same article.

South Africa is a great place to live - of course we have crime, so does France. And it happens all over the world. Thank you to all of you who don't do crime!! God bless you.

CHIEF JUSTICE MOGOENG MOGOENG: PUTS CHRIST JESUS BACK IN HIGH OFFICE

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng - he puts Christ Jesus back in High Office

It is very refreshing to follow our Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng's speeches and to see how consistently he refers to his faith in Christ Jesus. He longs for a more moral society and with leaders with integrity. I personally don't know any other Chief Justice of South Africa who were so openly in his testimony about a living faith in Christ.

On Thursday 17 November 2016 Mogoeng Mogoeng delivered the opening address at a gathering of Christ Redeemers Friends' International Church. He talked on the UN's 2030 agenda for sustainable development

On 27 May 2014 at Stellenbosch University he delivered a speech pleading for morality and integrity. You can view a video clip of the Chief Justice by clicking here, It is fascinating to listen to him.

Journalist Poplak took the Chief Justice to task - read it here. Poplak seems to be in favour of an immoral society as long as it is within the law! "But there is no way to “elevate the role of love and the sensible discouragement of divorce,” because in a moral society adults are free to behave immorally within the bounds of the law. The key word here is choice. Who is the Chief Justice to insist that South Africans refrain from shagging their neighbour’s spouse because of some religiously mandated edict?"

Journalist Poplak misses the point completely. Christ Jesus is against this immoral behavior. I agree fully with Mogoeng. Just look around you and see and read about the heartbreaks and shattered lives of immoral behavior. Christ Jesus is spot on. Read what He has to say about marriage and adultery in Matthew chapter 19. If you haven't got a Bible I urge you to go out and buy one and start reading it. If you have one, read it prayerfully everyday.

HUMAN TRACKING IN SOUTH AFRICA: A SEMINAR HIGHLIGHTING THIS CRIMINAL ACTIVITY

HUMAN TRAFFICKING: A SEMINAR AT WEBBER WENTZEL, SANDTON

Please take notice of this important topic and the seminar that is scheduled for 1 December 2016 at Webber Wentzel, Sandton.

Modern day slavery, human trafficking and drugs are bed fellows - they are inseparable.

Yes, I am aware that slavery was outlawed many years ago and Brink wrote about the effects it had on the people during those times. Yet, you should remember that it was only outlawed at the time. Slavery is since then illegal but so is murder. Oscar Pistorius acted with disregard of this simple fact and today he is a murderer. So is slavery illegal, but it is still practiced.

I invite you, if you are prepared to go deeper into this scourge of modern day slavery to have a look on the website of NEFARIOUS by clicking on this link. I further invite you to explore that website. Or go to this site by clicking on this link. You may even just use our old friend Dr Google by typing "modern day slavery" or click here

I trust that when you go to bed tonight that you will be acutely aware of this scourge and that you will say a word of prayer to Jesus Christ. And maybe, just maybe by tomorrow you might have done something extra for these people. Or for refugees.

TOWER OF HOPE, TROYEVILLE, JOHANNESBURG

Tower of Hope, Troyeville, Johannesburg

Deep inside Troyeville, Johannesburg there is was a disused and redundant cell phone tower on the property of Andrew Lindsay where he runs his Spaza Art shop and workplace. He with the help of an unknown artist with the pseudonym of R1 and a trash collector Isaac, they re-created this redundant piece of steel into a symbol of hope for the people of South Africa. When you click on the link you can read more about this wonderful project.

You can also see a short video clip of this Tower by clicking on this link.

Yes, in spite of all the negativity and the antics of Jakob Zuma and his Gupta cronies, there is hope.

The entrance to the Tower of Hope at the Spaza Art Shop, Troyeville, Johannesburg

Yes, I as a Christian believe that there is hope for our people - even for the angry students, for Jakob and his Guptas and all their shaky friends.

Thank you Andrew, R1 and Isaac for your initiative and message of hope that shines out over Johannesburg and now all over the world

PRESIDENT ZUMA: ALL SIGNALS TO THE BRAIN BLOCKED?

THE HONOURABLE PRESIDENT ZUMA DREAMING IN PARLIAMENT

Our beloved and Honorable President Jacob Zuma had a wonderful dream in Parliament while his beleaguered Minister of Finance was making his budget speech. He dreamed that Minister Pravin Gordhan would be locked up and that he [Zuma that is] would get away with everything.

It is clear that the Honorable President was taking a catnap and afterwards he was shaking hands with the Minister of Finance. I think he said goodbye to this good man and can't wait to re-appoint Des Van Rooyen.

The contortionist is at it again.

Bharat Morar - cobbler, Illovo, Johannesburg

Bharat Morar - cobbler, Illovo, Johannesburg

Bharat Morar is an exceptional man! He is plying his trade as a cobbler in Illovo Post Office Centre, Johannesburg for many, many years. He told me that his is a dying trade - and yet in spite of the saying, he is still going strong after many years.

I can only salute this man: Mr Bharat Morar. Thank you for your permission to take a photograph of you and your shop.

SPREAD JOY AROUND THE WORLD - MIKE STRICKLAND

You too can experience this

I have to post this today: Spread joy around the world. Look at this cartoon by Mike and his wife Kirsti Strickland and Dustin Haynes. I salute you for this wonderful cartoon - It is your idea that I am spreading with my blog around the world [read my post on the statistics to see it is going worldwide]. Thank you for encouraging me to do that.

And I am thinking of the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

STATISTICS OF MY BLOG & GOOGLE

NEW BLOG DIRECTION: BLOG STATISTICS & GOOGLE STATISTICS

I thank each and every person who looked at my blog and who googled my name and read what I wrote about; I do appreciate it immensely. I pray to God that you will be blessed and that you will pass this blessing onto other people as well. Let's strive to make this world a better place; consider your legacy! When you think about your legacy it extends to the future and it doesn't stop at you or your children or even at your grandchildren. It extends into future generations for many many many years.

I am acutely aware that the legacy that people leave are not always as simple as Facebook's LIKE button. At times it is crucially painful and even shameful. Other times it is something you would be proud of. Genealogists are working with painful and gainful memories of past generations. Saturday 15 October 2016 at the West Gauteng Branch of the Genealogical Society of South Africa we once again heard painful stories told by our members. My one friend told us that he longed to have something, [actually anything] in his grandpa's handwriting; eventually his grandmother gave him a note his grandpa wrote and he treasures it up to this day. Please visit the website of the GSSA and more particularly read the Newsletter published by West Gauteng Branch; of course I encourage you to read much wider than that - keep on reading!

What is your legacy?

Now onto the statistics: As at 18 October 2016, my blog have been visited by people from:

South Africa
55
United States
38
France
14
Australia
8
United Kingdom
8
Austria
3
Germany
3
Netherlands
3
Brazil
2
New Zealand
2

Google gives the statistics that as at 18 October 2016 that 48686 people had a look at my writings.

Once again, I thank you and trust that you have been blessed.

DECOLONISE SCIENCE!! A UNIVERSITY STUDENT FROM UCT CALLS FOR THIS!!

We have another brilliant mind that is calling for something extraordinary: Decolonise science.

Is suspect she must be related to our Honorable President - Science must fall and it is a Westernised concept.

Can you believe this? Of course you can - her compatriots were cheering her on. All of this happened in sacred space - where you may say anything preferably if it is stupid.

There is something seriously missing - maybe it has to do with science?

THERE IS ALMOST ALWAYS A PROTEST ACTION AT PARLIAMENT CAPE TOWN

The Protestor 11 October 2016

The world is an upside down place to live in.

People are protesting against everything and anything. There are always people who are unsatisfied with something; actually anything. Any place that represents authority is a good place to go to with your protest march. But you have to dress up smartly, because there are photographers lurking around every corner and who knows may you get noticed.

When I left the Portfolio Committee Meeting at Parliament on Tuesday I found these people silently and almost unobtrusively protesting against Mswati and his monarchy. They were a jovial lot of protesters and more than willing to be photograph. And then they started pointing out other people whom I should also photograph.

The protesters against the monarchy of Mswati 11 October 2016

It was clear that they were a completely different lot of people and not in the same league as the students that are looting and burning and threatening to kill so that they can study for free!

God still remembers even those suffering Alzheimer’s

Tree

Mrs Jenny Beck, a practising lawyer in New Zealand remembers her mother and she came to the conclusion that, in the face of her mom's Alzheimer's [if you are living in SA please get into touch with this organisation], God still remembers even those suffering from Alzheimer's - Jenny's net was cast very wide and inclusive of all the others, beside her beloved mother who suffer from this dread illness. Thank you Jenny for your expansive and all embracing insight.

I do hope that my image of this tree pays tribute to Jenny, her family and those afflicted by Alzheimer's.

INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT AND AFRICA: ONE DECADE ON

Ms Evelyn A Ankumah, Ms Angela Mudukuti, Judge Richard Goldstone & Ms Fatou Bensouda

I attended a book launch at Webber Wentzel Attorneys on 5 October 2016. The editor of the book THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT AND AFRICA is Ms Ankumah. The keynote was by H.E. Ms Fatou Bensouda, the chief prosecutor of the ICC [about the ICC: https://www.icc-cpi.int/about].

It was hosted by Webber Wentzel Attorney and the Dutch Embassy.

African countries are now complaining and falsely accuse the ICC of "colonialism" and that the ICC is unfairly targeting African Countries. It is abundantly clear, and it was so stated in the speeches yesterday, that the bulk of the human rights violations are committed on the African continent. It is also factually correct that almost all of the matters that are presently investigated by the ICC were referred to it by the African States themselves.

You will recall how the SA Government actively assisted President Al Bashir from Sudan to escape being arrested when he visited our country. You can read a lot of literature on this matter on the internet. It was announced at the meeting yesterday that the matter will be argued in the Constitutional Court on 22 November 2016. When you click on this link, it gives you access to the papers filed in the court.

UNCERTAINTY IN COLOMBIA AFTER VOTE AGAINST PEACE.

A Colombian busy voting - for or against peace? I do give credit to National Geographic photographer Sebastián Liste for this image.

According to news bulletins the Colombians voted against peace on 2 October 2016 and you can have a look at the National Geograpic photo essay against peace.

Just on the face of it, I ask myself a question: "Why would you vote against peace? or is it too simplistic to approach it this way?"

I however want to approach it somewhat from another angle, namely to look at the National Geographic images and to try and make sense out of that. My country South Africa have deep rural areas and it might be that an astute photographer could have taken those images somewhere in my country.

Public workers check votes after the polls closed at the Institución Educativa Nicolás Rojas in Yesca Grande, Quibdó, Chocó, Colombia.
I do give credit to National Geographic photographer Sebastián Liste for this image.

These are interesting thoughts and ideas that are floating in my mind. I would appreciate it to hear from you. Write me a note and send it to my e-mail address: neelscoertse@wirelessza.co.za

THE PINK LADY INTERNATIONAL FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION

I took this photograph at the Jewish Ghetto in Rome at a restaurant during April 2016

My ideas about food photography changed drastically after I looked at the Pink Lady's International Food Photography competition. That is the reason why I can publish this photo as part and parcel of food photography.

My chickens' eggs

Those images are definitely not what we have to look at on Facebook - you've seen those half eaten pies with gravy all over the plate and the wording: Mwah! Or "delicious." And then everybody like it - can you imagine that? Well, you don't have to imagine it - it is in you face all over Facebook.

Enjoy the Pink Lady's photos.

PRESIDENT OBAMA THE MENSCH

President Barack Obama shares his handkerchief with the son of the Late Israeli President Shimon Perez.

President Barack Obama is a mensch! He shared his handkerchief with the Late Israeli President Shimon Perez's son at the funeral of his father.

The official photographer of the White House Pete Souza captured this unique moment - or is it unique? I don't think so. It shows us that the high office of the White House did not dehumanise Mr Obama.

Thank you Mr Obama for this moment. Thank you Pete Souza for sharing it with us.

COURAGEOUS CONVERSATIONS: THE LAW RELATING TO A POWER OF ATTORNEY

Mrs Sonja Smith, Mr Rian Jansen Van Rensburg, Dr Hannetjie Van Zyl-Edeling, Neels Coertse, Mrs Aderyn Exley and Prof. Ricky Snyders at the 22nd South African Psychology Congress held at Emperors Palace, Johannesburg on Friday 23 September 2016

We presented lectures at the 22nd South African Psychology Congress held at Emperors Palace, Johannesburg on Friday 23 September 2016 on the topic: THE COURAGEOUS CONVERSATION SYMPOSIUM: BE MINDFUL OF YOUR LEGACY. It is estimated that about 70 psychologists attended this specific symposium. You can have a look at PsySSA's website by clicking on this link.

I presented a lecture on the law relating to powers of attorney. You can read my notes below:

COURAGEOUS CONVERSATIONS LECTURE CJC
Presented at the 22nd South African Psychology Congress in Emperors Palace on 23 September 2016
THIS DOES NOT CONSTITUTE LEGAL ADVICE.
PLEASE CONSULT YOUR ATTORNEY ASAP!
·         Thank you for the invitation.
·         My presentation will focus on a very, very narrow aspect of the law of agency:
o   Parents suffering from dementia.
·         Spherical approach
·         The Law of Agency
·         Power of Attorney
o   What is a power of attorney?
§  General power of attorney.
§  Special power of attorney:
·         Example: to pass transfer.
o   How is it obtained?
o   Does a power of attorney terminate?
§  Let us quickly look (remember just on the surface) at the legal relationship between you and your aging parents.
§  Once again there are rules and exceptions to these rules/principles.
§  Of course an agent may renounce the power given to him.
§  Death or change of status of the agent [that is you]?
·         One example: insolvency of your estate?
o   End of your authority to act on behalf of someone else.
§  Death or change of status of the principal [that is your dad].
§  Change of status. What does that mean?
§  At time when the power of attorney was signed, the principal [your dad] was mentally incapable of understanding what he was doing, the authority is of course non-existent.
§  The case of supervening mental incapacity is much, much more difficult [the case where he started to suffer from dementia and the progression of this illness].
§  Your parent starts to suffer from dementia, not much, but you notice something is not right. I venture to state that the entire relationship between you, your siblings, other family members and your father and/or mother change forever.
§  What does the law have say about this fundamental change in relationship?
§  Let's look at what happens on ground level (according to our law as it stands this is illegal and not to be encouraged):
·         The agent (mostly a child with the power of attorney to act on daddy’s behalf) continuous to act.
·         This state of affairs is rather dangerous.
·         Your dad for instance is now completely "gone" and you continue to act in terms of your power of attorney.
·         Your estate is sequestrated or to begin with, you were an insolvent when you got the PA.
·         Or your estate is subsequently sequestrated: your actions are null and void and can be attacked in court.
·         Or, you are solvent and you continue to act although your dad is "gone".
§  The current law in SA is that the PA came to an end and all of your actions can be attacked in court.
§  Application in terms of the Mental Health Act. This a route that I don't recommend.
§  The other route is an application in the High Court in terms of Rule 57 with the heading: De lunatico inquirendo appointment of curators in respect of persons under disability and release from curatorship.
§  Expensive court application.
§  Time consuming.
§  Two appearances.
§  The SA LAW COMMISSION is presently (for a very long time already and not near to completion) is looking into the matter.
§  Maybe one day we will have an enduring power of attorney. I think it is necessary.
§  Are there possible solutions?
·         Yes.
o   Enter into an agreement with your dad the terms and conditions maybe:
§  You are “employed” to do certain things for him.
§  To continue with his business [you are now the business manager taking care of the business].
§  You are compensated for your “services.”
§  Have it tailor made for your specific circumstances.
·         Short list for further reading & some aspects that need further investigation:
o   Signing Powers in General [for private individuals and not for corporate or government officials].
o   Consent to Disclose Medical Information & DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) And South African Medical Association Living Wills a nd Advance Directive
o   Trusts [Alter Ego Trusts]: Badenhorst V Badenhorst Case:
o   Estates Administration: SA Law Commission Report:
o   SA Law Commission: Assisted Decision-Making: Adults With Impaired Decisionmaking Capacity:
o   Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Optional Protocol:
o   Domestic Partnerships: Same Sex Relationships; Cohabitation Relationships SA Law Commission Report:
